Is Affliction a Real Threat to the UFC?

Like two glazing fighters in the ring, the UFC and Affliction are trading blows. Is Affliction a real threat, or will this be another 15-second fight before the final blow comes and the UFC reigns as champion once again?

Affliction has had a fairy tale start. With deep pockets like Donald Trump backing the company, they have been able to put a lot of money into their first card, but can they keep up the frenzied spending pace and still make money off of the venture? That remains to be seen. Fedor was not able to fight on October 11. This may be a good thing for Affliction since it means that they'll still have two fights left on his contract and they'll be able to make money off of him for a little bit longer . But the question remains, when Fedor's Affliction contract is up, who will get the next contract? And without Fedor, does Affliction really stand a chance?

Another long-term issue that may lead to Affliction's doom is the question of getting more fighters that are worth watching. They have Fedor for now, but they need a bigger roster of talented fighters. There is talk that Tito will sign on with them, but at this point a lot of fans are tired of Tito's drama. Let's face it; the UFC has a larger roster and more talent. By comparison Affliction is just an angry wasp trying to kill a bear.

The fans will decide the winner of this fight. The UFC has a lot of loyal fans, as evidenced by UFC ticket sales, but there are also fans who believe that competition will only make MMA better. And then there are those fans who do not like the UFC at all and are more than willing to pull out their cash for the competition. It's not like Affliction is unheard of either. Affliction is well-known by MMA fans thanks to using MMA fighters to market their t-shirts, so it is not like some upstart company is trying to make its way into the MMA market. Whether the more theatrical presentation that Affliction put on in July wins out, or the sporting event presentation that the UFC puts on, remains king of the MMA realm, remains to be seen. But just maybe, Dana White and the UFC are getting worried.

Since White's denials , it is obvious that the card that the UFC hastily dropped together on the same night as Affliction: "Banned" was an attempt to take viewers from Affliction's fight. It did not hurt that UFC's fight was free to watch on Spike. It looks like the UFC is more than a little worried about the Affliction threat. It remains to be seen whether this is a real threat, or just another second rate league that can not touch the legend of the UFC.

From The West Coast To The Deep, Deep South

This morning, I saw my first armadillo since my sister picked me up at the Houston airport and drove us 3 hours deeper into Texas. The prehistoric looking critter was ambling around out by the burn pile this morning. He finally waddled off into the woods.

Shifting from the West Coast to Deep East Texas has been quite a transition.

Mom can’t stay alone so I’m here as long as necessary. I forgot how different my home state of Texas is from every other place in the world.

A bobcat crossed the road on my way to town Friday. Before that, I saw an animal that I didn’t even know existed. It was like seeing a unicorn. I almost couldn’t believe it. It was a solid white deer. Others in town said they were rare but real.

I take that deer sighting as a good omen.

It’s been quite a ride since I arrived in the deep, deep South. One man was trying to tell me he wanted to sell a ‘fakir’ so many times I finally had to ask him to spell it. Turns out, he was trying to say ‘half acre’ but had condensed it to five letters.

It is nothing short of code talking here at times. “The devil’s whipping his wife,” one man announced. After a moments thought, I remembered that to mean that it is raining while the sun is shining. We dress funny. We talk funny. I love us.

It’s not enough to wear a belt buckle.

There is one horse on our property that is a former champion.Lynx still stands proud and tall. He lives where I am staying and I was told he brought home many of those shiny buckles that cowpeople wear as trophies of rodeo wins. He’s over 20 years old but that doesn’t stop him from bucking around in the pasture before a storm.

I tried to get Pedro to chase away a chicken snake but he just stepped over it. They only get excited when their lives are in danger but the long, black creature was easily five feet long and I didn’t like him in the yard.

Soda Jerks: Heroes Of The Past

Originally, what was called a soda fountain was a device that dispensed carbonated soft drinks and fizzy water, but as time went on, it was used as a general term for an ice cream shop and lunch counter, which we know as soda fountains. These began to appear in drug stores and dime stores in the mid 1800s.

Benjamin Silliman, a Yale chemistry professor, introduced carbonated soda water to America as early as 1806 in New Haven, CT home of Yale. It caught on quickly and, along with three partners, he began expanding into New York City and Baltimore. By the mid 1800s they knew they had a winner, especially with the addition of light meals, where anyone could grab a quick sandwich along with a frozen delight. The idea of drug stores was pretty ingenious, since cola syrups were instilled with fizzy water and originally sold as refugees. Soda fountains could be ornate with marble counters and Tiffany lamps or plain, usually with a mirrored back wall and the familiar goose-neck soda water dispenser which the servers, known affectionately as "soda jerks", who worked those black-handled spigots and filled up glasses, creating wonderfully bubbly drinks which ticked noses and delicious taste buds. Creating a popular meeting place for all ages, small town and large cities embroced them and customers often standing in line for a seat during busy hours, happily contemplating their orders. On warm summer evenings, a fizzy fresh lemonade cooled off thirsty patrons or better yet, a banana split could have been shared with a best friend or sister.

Most soda fountains stocked chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream (some even featured New York cherry, butter pecan and tutti-frutti) along with chocolate, strawberry and marshmallow syrups. To top things off, crushed nuts and maraschino cherries added to the visual delight of those glorious concoctions. Hot fudge sundaes were created to serve on Sundays when religions forbade the sale of fizzy water, thus prohibiting the popular chocolate ice cream sodas from being served. (Apparently the ice cream and syrup were not considered sinful but the soda water was – go figure.)

Sadly, in the 1950s drug stores moved in the direction of self service, eliminating lunch counters and ice cream alike, and fast food began to replace the lunch counter with hamburgers and shakes which bore little resemblance to their predecessors. Out with the old, in with the new as more and more space was needed for the hundreds of shelves displaying boxed and bottled products, replacing the soda jerks and less income-generating egg salad sandwiches.

Today, there are still ice cream parlors and vintage fountains sprinkled around the country, continuing the nostalgia of the originals, And in small towns, root beer stands still happily serve floats and soft serve ice cream, but it is not quite the same. Oh sure, you can go to Dairy Queen or Baskin-Robbins and get a sundae or even a banana split, but something is missing. Is it those hats, or is it just a piece of history?

Chinatown Bus Lines are a Budget Traveler's Dream

A Guide to the Chinatown Bus

The word is out – the cheapest way to get from one major US city to another is on the "Chinatown bus". In recent years this has become transportation option of choice for budget travelers in New York, Washington DC, and Boston, and more recently on the West Coast. Students, backpackers, and an array of other savvy travelers have long loved the rock bottom prices that these bus companies offer. Despite the popularity of these bus lines it can still be difficult to find information on Chinatown bus service.
What exactly is a "Chinatown Bus"? Read on and you will have the inside track on this great budget travel option.

Chinatown Bus history

The Chinatown bus phenomenon began in the late 1990s when an entrepreneur in New York's Chinatown started running daily bus service from Chinatown in New York to Chinatown in Boston. The service was aimed at Asian immigrants who wanted to shop or visit relatives in either city and needed cheap and convenient transportation. The service was bare bones – no advertising, customer service, or bus stations. Customers simply went to the bus stop, waited for the bus (or van), and paid the driver upon boarding. For those willing to do without frills, they offered the same service as traditional bus companies at a substantially lower price. Before long, the word spread and all kinds of people started using the service. It became especially popular with students, budget travelers, or people for what the service was simply more convenient.

Soon more bus companies duplicated this model and started offering service in other cities. Now you can find this type of bus service in Philadelphia, Virginia, Baltimore Washington DC, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. At this point the term "Chinatown bus" is used more loosely to describe this sort of low-cost / low-frills service. Many, if not most, of the companies do not have Chinatown as their main location and may not cater to the immigrant population at all. These operators are also sometimes referred to as "curbside" operators.

How can tickets be so cheap?

$ 15 between New York to Boston? $ 25 from Las Vegas to Los Angeles? It seems hard to fathom. Chinatown bus companies are able to keep prices low because they operate in a fundamentally different way from traditional carriers. Foremost, the service is very basic. There is little in the way of customer service or amenities. Most of these operators do not have formal stations, picking up passengers at bus stops instead. They eschew traditional advertising in favor of word of mouth. Further, many of the operators play a very hands-on role in the operation – you will not see idle executables at a small independent bus company. Finally, these operators make sure they fill their buses. That is why Chinatown bus operators usually only operate on heavily trafficked routes. Indeed some companies only run buses at peak times.

Are they safe?

When these companies first started operating, concerns were raised about safety standards. There is still controversy within the bus industry about whether these newcomers are complying with the same regulations as the traditional companies. However, a task force set up by the Federal government to look at safety issues found that Chinatown bus companies did not perform better or worse than other types of bus companies (ie. Charter, tour buses). All bus companies operating in the US must undergo the same inspection standards and must comply with the same rules. Realistically there is probably a range of quality among Chinatown bus carriers. Some are fly-by-night operators trying to make a fast buck, while others are legitimate entrepreneurs who plan to grow and operate a long term business.

What you should expect

  • No frills service – the driver may be the ticket collector; there will not be a lot of customer service.
  • Comfortable buses. Since the low fares buses are usually quite nice. Most buses are comparable to Greyhound and many are actually more deluxe.
  • Communication challenges. Drivers are legally required to speak enough English to help passengers in the case of emergency. In reality this is often adhered to rather loosely. At the very least, expect your driver to have an accent.
  • Possible delays. Many of these bus routes are on highly congested roads. When the roads are busy, expect delays.
  • Rest stops. Buses will have a lavatory on board but there is usually a 10 or 15 minute bathroom break on trips over 4 hours. Do not be late returning to the bus, the driver will not count heads before leaving at the appointed time.
  • Full buses. Buses definitely sell out at peak times (weekends and evenings). Book ahead or get there early if you want secure a seat.
  • Plastic Bags. An odd little quirk on Chinatown buses is that every aisle seat usually has a plastic grocery bag tied to the arm. I guess they find this is the best way to keep the buses clean.

How do I find the Chinatown Bus?

Again, "Chinatown bus" is a term used to describe a type of operator and not an individual bus company. Many unlisted bus companies fall into this category. Since most Chinatown buses do not spend money on advertising it can be difficult to find out details about schedules and bus stop locations. Many of the carriers are becoming savvier about the Internet and quite a few have websites with information. Usually an Internet search will yield links to bus service to your destination. There are also several directories, such as chinatown-bus.org that include links for most Chinatown bus companies and the author's employer, GotoBus.com, is a centralized booking site that has schedules and sells tickets online for most Chinatown bus companies.

The Chinatown bus is not for everyone. If you want an order system with American style customer service, you should probably stick to traditional carriers. However, if you know what to expect and come prepared with a sense of adventure and humor, you should enjoy the trip just fine. You will also enjoy the money you save!

The Basics of Video Conferencing

Modern business operations all share the same rapidly depleting commodity: Time. When time is leveraged, productivity and output invariably increases within a business organization. Technology continues to provide workers and businesses with new tools to help leakage time. Video conferencing could prove to be one of the most important time leveraging business tools of the 21st century.

Once a luxury for only the largest companies, video conferencing is beginning to change the landscape of how businesses communicate with both employees and clients. In its simplest form, video conferencing allows two individuals to be thousands of miles apart yet still effectively communicate as if they were in the same room. Systems in use today can now connect multiple parties across multiple continents – in real time with excellent and high quality video and audio.

The Origins of Video Conferencing

Video conferencing capacities originated in the 1970s. Similar to every other technology in use today, video conferencing has changed dramatically since first being developed. Early proponents of video conferencing technology had no standards or protocols to rely on. This fact made a teleconference via video an expensive proposition – one that only huge companies and government agencies could afford. In a time where cell phones were still a decade away for most consumers and businesses, video teleconferences were few and far between.

Today, affordable networks and systems are widely available across the globe. Interoperability of video teleconferencing systems is essentially guaranteed now that standards and protocols have been clearly established.

Specific Standards and Protocols for Video Conferencing

To make any technology usable for the masses, standards and protocols are required to insure systems, software and hardware are ubiquitous across the board.

To help guarantee video teleconferencing compatibility between manufacturers, the International Telecommunications Union developed and defined a series of video conferencing standards. In place since the mid-1990s, current standards are defined in terms of H.3xx.

H.3xx are "umbrella" recommendations for video conferencing. They include the protocols for coding video / audio, multiplexing, signaling, and control.

The core H.3xx recommendations are as follows:

H.320 – Narrow-band video conferencing over circuit-switched networks (N-ISDN, SW56, dedicated networks) H.321 – Narrow-band video conferencing over ATM and B-ISDN H.323 – Narrow-band video conferencing over non -Guaranteed quality-of-service packet networks (LAN, Internet, etc.) H.324 – Very narrow-band video conferencing over the general (dial-up) telephone network H.310 – Wide-band (MPEG-2) video conferencing over ATM and B-ISDN H.323 is a standard for audio, video, and data communication over IP-based (Internet Protocol) networks.

All major video conferencing manufacturers produce ITU compliant equipment. When choosing video conference equipment, be sure that you select a system that does not offer only proprietary methods of operation.

How Video Conferencing Works

The success of a video teleconference depends entirely on the equipment and network capabilities behind that equipment.

Since real-time video contains a tremendous amount of data, it is imperative that the system being used can handle a high amount of bandwidth at any given time. Fortunately, video conferencing systems are designed to "sample" and "compress" a certain portion of data (such as the unchanging "background 'of the room) to help conserve bandwidth. "A video codec is the device or software that enables video compression and or decompression for digital video.

It is the job of the codec to "sample" data at specific time intervals (fractions of a second) and then compress this data so that it can be delivered across the network. The codec on the receiving end then reassembles audio and video for transmission onto a television or computer screen. To conserve bandwidth, the codec focuses on the most important data – ie moving objects such as people, props, etc. Moving objects take a reasonable amount of processing power, so the better the codec, the higher quality your video conference will appear.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing a Video Conferencing Solution

A wide variety of video conferencing systems are available in the marketplace. Before purchasing equipment or services from vendors, consider the following as a starting point to narrow down the requirements of a system that fits with your business needs:

How will you be using video conferencing? A simple video conference between employees in the same town, building or area will require a more basic solution than video conferencing multiple parties across the vast distances. Determine the maximum video conference scenario you will be utilizing to narrow down bandwidth and equipment requirements.

How large is the meeting room where you plan to conduct video conferences? Camera capacities will depend on the size of the room and number of people involved. Conducting a video conference in a small auditorium with dozens of participants will require a quite different solution than 1-2 individuals transmitting from a small office.

On what type of network will your video conference be hosted? The network you choose to host your videoconference will play a key role in overall reliability and performance. Most video conferencing systems sold today include an IP interface with ISDN as an option. Determine the capabilities of your network before deciding on any one specific video conferencing solution.

The Future of Video Conferencing

Increasing productivity while reducing costs will always be an important part of any business. The popularity of video conferencing will unduly increase in the coming years. Virtually all industries will eventually utilize video conferencing in some form to help bring people together – at least less cost than physical travel for face-to-face meetings. As more corporations, health care providers and governments experience the value in video conferencing as a time and money-saving tool, the technology will become more necessity than luxury. The age of the video conference has just begun!

The Favorite Receivers Of Baltimore Colts Quarterback Bert Jones

Bert Jones is routiniously brought up in discussions about quarterbacks who were both great and vastly underrated. Jones played on some Baltimore Colts teams that did not have a lot of other star players on the roster. Still, he performed at a high level and lifted the entire team with the quality of his play. Due to back injuries, he did not play as long as he probably could and still was effective, but his career was a success on an individual level if not on a team one.

While it's true that the time during Jones' stay with the team was not the franchise's most successful, it's also true that it was not due to lack of effort on the part of the quarterback. Whether throwing the long bomb or scrambling around, buying some time, and finding the uncoached man, Bert Jones was something really special to watch. During his career though, the bulk of which was spent with the Colts, who were his favorite receivers?

Here is a look at the top receivers based on how many touchdown passages Bert Jones thread to them.

# 1 – Roger Carr (24)

# 2 – Glenn Doughty (16)

# 3 – Lydell Mitchell (13)

# 4 – Don McCauley (12)

# 5 (Tie) – Ray Butler (10)

# 5 (Tie) – Raymond Chester (10)

Bert Jones thread to a variety of receivers during his career, and each of them played a large part in his success. Fans of him knew that watching Bert Jones meant that they were going to see a show.

Percy Harvin Early Life Bio – Former University of Florida (UF) Gators Football Player

The professional football player widely known as Percy Harvin was actually born William Percival Harvin III in May of 1988 and adopted the nickname Percy as short for his middle name Percival at a young age. Harvin went onto garner national attention as a standout player for the University of Florida (UF) Gators football program where he was an offensive weapon that helped the college win two national championships. After being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in April of 2009 Percy has enjoyed the entire of his pro football career in the National Football League (NFL) with the Minneapolis based Minnesota Vikings.

Long before becoming one of the favorite receiving targets for future hall of fame quarterback Brett Favre Percy grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he excelled in athletics at Landstown High School. In 2004 the Landstown Eagles, his school football team, won a Virginia state championship. Interestingly with a high school state championship in 2004 and college national championships in 2006 and 2008 Harvin near won championships at the high school, college, and professional levels in a five year span before the Vikings suffered an overtime loss that resulted in the team being knocked out of the NFL playoffs one game shy of reaching the Super Bowl. A little known fact is that years before even winning a high school football championship Percy was part of a Pop Warner football team at the age of 13 that actually won the Pop Warner National Championship.

At 5'11 "Harvin has always been considered a bit undersized and has also always been considered one of the fastest players on the football field. Percy reportedly ran a 40 yard dash in 4.32 seconds as a freshman in high school. that speed would be considered one of the fastest even by NFL combine standards. In February of 2009 at the NFL Combine Harvin was timed in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.41 seconds.

As a track and field star Percy set five state track and field records and won state championships in the 200 meter dash, triple jump, long jump, 400 meter relay, and 100 meter dash. The success Harvin had on the track was unpresented as no one in the state of Virginia had ever before won five state championships in a single track meet.

The unrivaled speed that Harvin demonstrated on the grid iron, track, and even the basketball court made him one of the most coveted high school enrollments in the nation. In 2005 Percy was nationally recognized by respected football recruiting publications as being the top junior prospect in the country. Ultimately Harvin decided to play college football for the University of Florida over competitive scholarship from perceived front runner Florida State University as well as the University of Miami, University of Southern California, and the University of Michigan.

IMF Cautions of Global Trade Danger

The group responsible for monitoring the financial system of several countries has given alerts regarding the global trade depreciation caused by oil price hikes and the degenerating American housing market. In an announcement, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that the two industries can lead the global trade and the international economy to jumble.

The IMF is an international organization, which is composed of 184 members including the United States, was established in 1946 right after the windup of the Second World War. It was created due to the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference. The basic tasks of the fund are to lend member countries with funds and to provide financing solutions to momentary balance of payment problems. The organization is also responsible in assisting the expansion and balanced growth of global trade and the international economy, and in ensuring international monetary cooperation among member nations. The said organization played an active role in the economic and financial rules and policies of some highly obligated member countries and in the maintenance of the nation’s monetary stability.

The organization also declared that the American dollar may drop because of the disordered savings policies and asset imbalances in the global trade. It can be noted that the several groups already made an appeal to the international economy, most especially to the developed countries like Japan and Germany, to increase their expenses and not rely on the US to become the sole trade market machine.

The said announcement was promulgated even before the annual World Bank and IMF conference that will take place in Singapore this month. The conference hasn’t started yet, however, ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) affluent nations and other finance leaders are already having discussion about these policies in Singapore. In its current report, IMF emphasized the possible factors that can jeopardize the incessant global trade growth.

The fast-paced increase of oil cost in the global trade have banded together with the current figures illustrating that the market of new US homes dropped by 4.3 percent last July have fanned the flames of worries regarding an international economic backslide. The said declination in the home market is considered the most huge drop since last February.

The Global Financial Stability article released by the IMF stated that the current global trade crisis serves as an opportunely admonition for finance ministers from various communities to empower macro-economic rules and policies, and strive in implementing the much-required structural changes.

In the center of the maelstrom of issues of fear and worries about the global trade, the current report came out the day right after China announced that it had already posted a report of $18.8 billion trade balance with other nations last August. On the contrary, the US has its trade decreased to over $64bn. As a reason to the difference between the trade growth of US and China is the Asian nation’s weak currency that makes the goods from the said country to become relatively cheap resulting to the boosts in their export business.

The Lincoln Monument is surreal up close and there are no pictures that do it justice; it is an overwhelming site to behold. On clear days the Washington Monument is clearly reflected in the reflection pool that the mall is built around. There is the World War II veteran's memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. There are ten Smithsonian Museums located along the National Mall; each one can take at least four hours to wander through. There is so much history along the mall. Each building on the Mall is free to enter, there is a box in front of the building to make pledges but it is not required. There are other sights that must be seen on a trip to Washington DC. The White House, of course is a must.
