Give Yourself Plenty of Time to Explore Albany and Surroundings

Originally settled by convicts and used as a military base, Albany was first settled in 1827, making it the oldest city in Western Australia. Back in the early 19th century, the French had their eye on Western Australia. Since what is now known as Albany had the largest natural harbor in that region of the country, it was felt that it needed protecting.

Today, Albany's primary industry is tourism. The city's rich and colorful history remains on display in its architecture and historical sites. This, combined with the area's natural beauty makes Albany one of Western Australia's premier tourist destinations.

One of the best ways to see many of the best of the more than 50 historical sites in Albany is to take the Amity Trail. The thirty minute tour of the Amity Trail is an ideal way to get to know the city. Also not to be missed is the replica of the Brig Amity, the ship that greeted the first settlers and convinces into Albany.

The last whaling ships withdrew from Albany in 1979, but "whaling" in the form of whale watching is still a big part of Albany's attraction. You can often easily spot whales from the shore, but for a more exciting and close-up view of magnificent Southern Right and Humpback whales, you will want to take a whale watching cruise. While you're at it, you will want to visit Whale World, a fascinating exhibit located at the site of Australia's last whaling station.

Albany's rugged coastline and sheltered white sand beaches make it a favorite with holiday makers in landlocked Perth. The Gap, a narrow, rectangular inlet flanked by 20 foot cliffs is a dizzying experience, especially when big waves sweep in and crash against the rocks. The nearby Natural Bridge is also an amazing sight. Another coastal attraction you will not want to miss is the ruins of the Old Forts Lighthouse on King Point.

One of the more popular scenic walks in Albany is the Middleton Beach Boardwalk. It's not a long walk, only around 2 miles (3km), but makes you feel like you have immersed yourself in nature. More adventurous explorers head for the rugged coastline in Torndirrup National Park.

Long before the European settlers arrived in the Albany area, it was home to indigenous Australians, who called the area Kinjarling or "place of water." This was a good name for the region, because rainfall is high through the winter. During the peak summer holiday season, there is just enough rain to freshen the air keep the landscape green and verdant.

Now that tourism has become Albany's major industry, there is no shortage of Albany accommodations to choose from. They run the gamut from comfortable budget accommodations to luxurious resorts. Albany's permanent population is less than 30,000, making it an ideal place to stay. Everything is at your fingertips, but the city has a wide-open, spacious feel. To get the most out of your vacation in Albany, plan on staying awhile. There is just too much you will want to see to try to cram it all in a day or two.

Celebrating Independently-Minded Women In America

Fighting For Women's Rights & Education

From early on, women bought for their rights – whether it was to own land, to give girls the opportunity for a good education, or for equal rights in the workplace. Here are some women who stand out in history:

Margaret Brent: In 1639, Brent became the first female landowner in Maryland. A close friend of Governor Leonard Calvert, he appointed her the executor of his estate. The Provincial Court appointed Brent as Lord Baltimore's attorney-in-fact in 1648 and, as part of her duties, she made sure soldiers were paid and fed and her actions helped to avoid mutiny in the colony. She was a significant finding settler of both Maryland and Virginia. She was also the first woman in North America to appear before a common law court.

Sarah Josepha Hale: The author of the nursery rhyme "Mary had a little lamb" was a fierce supporter of education for girls. After her husband's death in 1822, Hale launched her writing and magazine editing career to support her five children. She was instrumental in changing minds to allow girls into professions like teaching, and later medicine.

"In this age of innovation during no experience will have an influence more important on the character and happiness of our society than the granting to females the advantages of a systematic and thorough education." – Sarah Josepha Hale

Gloria Steinem: In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Steinem became nationally recognized as the spokeswoman for the feminist movement. She is a journalist and social and political activist and is currently speaking about the issues of equality through the world.

In 1920, American women got the right to vote – after 70 years of fighting for this right. Over the years, there were many women who helped fight for the right to vote. Here we highlight some of the most prominent:

Lucy Stone: In 1847, Stone became the first woman in Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She was a vocal advocate for women's rights and the abolition of slavery at a time when women were discouraged and even preverted to speak in public. Stone kept her maiden name after her marriage – something that was strictly frowned upon at the time. She founded the Woman's Journal, a weekly magazine about women's rights.

Lucretius Mott: Mott believed that the roles women played in society at the time were due to limited education, not inferiority. She supported equal political rights and economic opportunities.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton: Stanton helped form the first women's rights convention in 1848, with Lucretia Mott.

"Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice." – Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Women In Politics

Not so long ago, women were not allowed to participate in political affairs. Here are some women who helped change the gender gap in politics:

Jeannette Rankin: Selected in 1916, Rankin was the first woman in Congress. Prior to joining Congress, she was a professional lobbyist for the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and her efforts helped women in Montana to gain the vote in 1914.

"I may be the first woman member of Congress, but I will not be the last." – Jeannette Rankin

Eleanor Roosevelt: The wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, she dramatically changed the role of the first lady through her active participation in American politics. During her husband's presidency, Roosevelt wrote a newspaper column, cave press conferences, and spoke about human rights, children's causes, and women's issues. After his death, she became the delegate to the United Nations and served from 1945 to 1953. She also served as the chair of the UN's Human Rights Commission.

"Women are like teabags. You do not know how strong they are until you put them in hot water." – Eleanor Roosevelt

Madeleine Albright: In 1993, Albright became the US Ambassador to the United Nations. In 1997, she was appointed as the first female US Secretary of State. In 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Albright holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, as well as numerous honorary degrees.

Women In Sports, Adventure, And Entertainment

A woman can hold their own when it comes to adventure, entertainment, and sports. Here are some of the women who excelled:

Amelia Earhart: An aviation pioneer, author, and idol to many, Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She helped form The Ninety-Nines, an organization supporting female pilots. She was also an adviser to the aeronautical engineering faculty at Purdue University and a career counselor to female students. In 1937, she disappeared near Howland Island during an attempt to make a circumnavigation flight of the globe.

"The woman who can create her own job is the woman who will win fame and fortune." – Amelia Earhart

Florence Chadwick: Chadwick was 32 years old when she became the first woman to swim the English Channel both ways in 1951. She attempted the crossing ten times, of which she successfully completed four legs.

Katherine Hepburn: This leading lady was known for her fiercely independence and outspoken personality. Hepburn wore trousers before it was fashionable for women to do so and lived her life independently and out of the spotlight. During her career of more than 60 years, Hepburn won four Academy Awards for Best Actress. She died in 2003.

High-Achievers

Many women have great results every day, but here are some pioneers:

Bridget 'Biddy' Mason: Born a slave, Biddy had to fight for her freedom in an LA court in 1856. California, where she lived at the time, was a free state, but her 'owner', Smith, wanted to move them to Texas, where slaves were not free, to sell his slaves there. After winning in court and becoming free, she worked in Los Angeles as a nurse and midwife. She became one of the first African-Americans to purchase land in the city. A real-estate businesswoman, she accrued a reliably large fortune for the time – nearly $ 300,000 – which she generously shared with charities.

Ellen Swallow Richards: Richards was an industrial and environmental chemist, and the first to apply chemistry to the study of nutrition. She was the first woman admitted to any school of science and technology in America, and also the first woman to obtain a degree in chemistry. She graduated from MIT in 1872.

Winifred Edgerton Merril: Merrill was the first woman in the US to obtain a Ph.D. in Mathematics and the first to receive a degree from Columbia University. She achieved her Ph.D. with high honors in 1886. She was instrumental in the formation of the Barnard College in 1889, New York's first institution to award women a degree in liberal arts. She also founded the Oaksmere School for Girls in 1906.

Elizabeth Blackwell: In 1849, Blackwell became the first female physician in the US and the first woman listed on the UK Medical Register. Originally born in Britain, Blackwell had to fight to get permission to study and work in the medical field. She advocated for the education of women in medicine.

Sandra Day O'Connor: Appointed in 1981, O'Connor became the first woman justice on the US Supreme Court, a position she held for 24 years.

Chinatown Bus Lines are a Budget Traveler's Dream

A Guide to the Chinatown Bus

The word is out – the cheapest way to get from one major US city to another is on the "Chinatown bus". In recent years this has become transportation option of choice for budget travelers in New York, Washington DC, and Boston, and more recently on the West Coast. Students, backpackers, and an array of other savvy travelers have long loved the rock bottom prices that these bus companies offer. Despite the popularity of these bus lines it can still be difficult to find information on Chinatown bus service.
What exactly is a "Chinatown Bus"? Read on and you will have the inside track on this great budget travel option.

Chinatown Bus history

The Chinatown bus phenomenon began in the late 1990s when an entrepreneur in New York's Chinatown started running daily bus service from Chinatown in New York to Chinatown in Boston. The service was aimed at Asian immigrants who wanted to shop or visit relatives in either city and needed cheap and convenient transportation. The service was bare bones – no advertising, customer service, or bus stations. Customers simply went to the bus stop, waited for the bus (or van), and paid the driver upon boarding. For those willing to do without frills, they offered the same service as traditional bus companies at a substantially lower price. Before long, the word spread and all kinds of people started using the service. It became especially popular with students, budget travelers, or people for what the service was simply more convenient.

Soon more bus companies duplicated this model and started offering service in other cities. Now you can find this type of bus service in Philadelphia, Virginia, Baltimore Washington DC, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. At this point the term "Chinatown bus" is used more loosely to describe this sort of low-cost / low-frills service. Many, if not most, of the companies do not have Chinatown as their main location and may not cater to the immigrant population at all. These operators are also sometimes referred to as "curbside" operators.

How can tickets be so cheap?

$ 15 between New York to Boston? $ 25 from Las Vegas to Los Angeles? It seems hard to fathom. Chinatown bus companies are able to keep prices low because they operate in a fundamentally different way from traditional carriers. Foremost, the service is very basic. There is little in the way of customer service or amenities. Most of these operators do not have formal stations, picking up passengers at bus stops instead. They eschew traditional advertising in favor of word of mouth. Further, many of the operators play a very hands-on role in the operation – you will not see idle executables at a small independent bus company. Finally, these operators make sure they fill their buses. That is why Chinatown bus operators usually only operate on heavily trafficked routes. Indeed some companies only run buses at peak times.

Are they safe?

When these companies first started operating, concerns were raised about safety standards. There is still controversy within the bus industry about whether these newcomers are complying with the same regulations as the traditional companies. However, a task force set up by the Federal government to look at safety issues found that Chinatown bus companies did not perform better or worse than other types of bus companies (ie. Charter, tour buses). All bus companies operating in the US must undergo the same inspection standards and must comply with the same rules. Realistically there is probably a range of quality among Chinatown bus carriers. Some are fly-by-night operators trying to make a fast buck, while others are legitimate entrepreneurs who plan to grow and operate a long term business.

What you should expect

  • No frills service – the driver may be the ticket collector; there will not be a lot of customer service.
  • Comfortable buses. Since the low fares buses are usually quite nice. Most buses are comparable to Greyhound and many are actually more deluxe.
  • Communication challenges. Drivers are legally required to speak enough English to help passengers in the case of emergency. In reality this is often adhered to rather loosely. At the very least, expect your driver to have an accent.
  • Possible delays. Many of these bus routes are on highly congested roads. When the roads are busy, expect delays.
  • Rest stops. Buses will have a lavatory on board but there is usually a 10 or 15 minute bathroom break on trips over 4 hours. Do not be late returning to the bus, the driver will not count heads before leaving at the appointed time.
  • Full buses. Buses definitely sell out at peak times (weekends and evenings). Book ahead or get there early if you want secure a seat.
  • Plastic Bags. An odd little quirk on Chinatown buses is that every aisle seat usually has a plastic grocery bag tied to the arm. I guess they find this is the best way to keep the buses clean.

How do I find the Chinatown Bus?

Again, "Chinatown bus" is a term used to describe a type of operator and not an individual bus company. Many unlisted bus companies fall into this category. Since most Chinatown buses do not spend money on advertising it can be difficult to find out details about schedules and bus stop locations. Many of the carriers are becoming savvier about the Internet and quite a few have websites with information. Usually an Internet search will yield links to bus service to your destination. There are also several directories, such as chinatown-bus.org that include links for most Chinatown bus companies and the author's employer, GotoBus.com, is a centralized booking site that has schedules and sells tickets online for most Chinatown bus companies.

The Chinatown bus is not for everyone. If you want an order system with American style customer service, you should probably stick to traditional carriers. However, if you know what to expect and come prepared with a sense of adventure and humor, you should enjoy the trip just fine. You will also enjoy the money you save!

Soda Jerks: Heroes Of The Past

Originally, what was called a soda fountain was a device that dispensed carbonated soft drinks and fizzy water, but as time went on, it was used as a general term for an ice cream shop and lunch counter, which we know as soda fountains. These began to appear in drug stores and dime stores in the mid 1800s.

Benjamin Silliman, a Yale chemistry professor, introduced carbonated soda water to America as early as 1806 in New Haven, CT home of Yale. It caught on quickly and, along with three partners, he began expanding into New York City and Baltimore. By the mid 1800s they knew they had a winner, especially with the addition of light meals, where anyone could grab a quick sandwich along with a frozen delight. The idea of drug stores was pretty ingenious, since cola syrups were instilled with fizzy water and originally sold as refugees. Soda fountains could be ornate with marble counters and Tiffany lamps or plain, usually with a mirrored back wall and the familiar goose-neck soda water dispenser which the servers, known affectionately as "soda jerks", who worked those black-handled spigots and filled up glasses, creating wonderfully bubbly drinks which ticked noses and delicious taste buds. Creating a popular meeting place for all ages, small town and large cities embroced them and customers often standing in line for a seat during busy hours, happily contemplating their orders. On warm summer evenings, a fizzy fresh lemonade cooled off thirsty patrons or better yet, a banana split could have been shared with a best friend or sister.

Most soda fountains stocked chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream (some even featured New York cherry, butter pecan and tutti-frutti) along with chocolate, strawberry and marshmallow syrups. To top things off, crushed nuts and maraschino cherries added to the visual delight of those glorious concoctions. Hot fudge sundaes were created to serve on Sundays when religions forbade the sale of fizzy water, thus prohibiting the popular chocolate ice cream sodas from being served. (Apparently the ice cream and syrup were not considered sinful but the soda water was – go figure.)

Sadly, in the 1950s drug stores moved in the direction of self service, eliminating lunch counters and ice cream alike, and fast food began to replace the lunch counter with hamburgers and shakes which bore little resemblance to their predecessors. Out with the old, in with the new as more and more space was needed for the hundreds of shelves displaying boxed and bottled products, replacing the soda jerks and less income-generating egg salad sandwiches.

Today, there are still ice cream parlors and vintage fountains sprinkled around the country, continuing the nostalgia of the originals, And in small towns, root beer stands still happily serve floats and soft serve ice cream, but it is not quite the same. Oh sure, you can go to Dairy Queen or Baskin-Robbins and get a sundae or even a banana split, but something is missing. Is it those hats, or is it just a piece of history?

Is Affliction a Real Threat to the UFC?

Like two glazing fighters in the ring, the UFC and Affliction are trading blows. Is Affliction a real threat, or will this be another 15-second fight before the final blow comes and the UFC reigns as champion once again?

Affliction has had a fairy tale start. With deep pockets like Donald Trump backing the company, they have been able to put a lot of money into their first card, but can they keep up the frenzied spending pace and still make money off of the venture? That remains to be seen. Fedor was not able to fight on October 11. This may be a good thing for Affliction since it means that they'll still have two fights left on his contract and they'll be able to make money off of him for a little bit longer . But the question remains, when Fedor's Affliction contract is up, who will get the next contract? And without Fedor, does Affliction really stand a chance?

Another long-term issue that may lead to Affliction's doom is the question of getting more fighters that are worth watching. They have Fedor for now, but they need a bigger roster of talented fighters. There is talk that Tito will sign on with them, but at this point a lot of fans are tired of Tito's drama. Let's face it; the UFC has a larger roster and more talent. By comparison Affliction is just an angry wasp trying to kill a bear.

The fans will decide the winner of this fight. The UFC has a lot of loyal fans, as evidenced by UFC ticket sales, but there are also fans who believe that competition will only make MMA better. And then there are those fans who do not like the UFC at all and are more than willing to pull out their cash for the competition. It's not like Affliction is unheard of either. Affliction is well-known by MMA fans thanks to using MMA fighters to market their t-shirts, so it is not like some upstart company is trying to make its way into the MMA market. Whether the more theatrical presentation that Affliction put on in July wins out, or the sporting event presentation that the UFC puts on, remains king of the MMA realm, remains to be seen. But just maybe, Dana White and the UFC are getting worried.

Since White's denials , it is obvious that the card that the UFC hastily dropped together on the same night as Affliction: "Banned" was an attempt to take viewers from Affliction's fight. It did not hurt that UFC's fight was free to watch on Spike. It looks like the UFC is more than a little worried about the Affliction threat. It remains to be seen whether this is a real threat, or just another second rate league that can not touch the legend of the UFC.

These Will Be the Big Stories of 2018

Weihnachtsgans with chestnut stuffing … rotkraut … salzkartoffeln … plus a steamed and roasted ente, and, of course, a ham.

And do not forget the mustard, scharfer senf.

Yep … I'm still thinking of the Christmas supper I prepared for family and friends a week ago.

As you can see, I decided to go full-on Deutsch. My family on my father's side came from the Ländle ("dear land" in the local dialect) of Baden-Württemberg in the 1860s, by way of Baltimore.

Sometimes I hear those ancestors calling to me, as I learned they can do when I lived in Africa. You do not hear their voices, of course; you just get a feeling. That's their language. This year, they said: "Gans zu Weihnachten, von Jungen!"

The most important thing I've learned from my German ancestors is this: Nothing is permanent. Eventually, change will come. When you live in the middle of European history, it's inevitable.

Best be ready.

To honor my ancestors' wisdom, here are my predictions for 2018.

I'm no Nostradamus, but I'm going to stick my neck out and make a few calls for Wall Street 2018 based on evidence, logic … and history. And we have all year to see how I do …

Here goes …

Wall Street First Quarter

There will be a strong post-holiday stock market rally as tax-sensitive US sectors like retail and telecoms begin to post big gains on the back of the tax cuts and strong holiday sales. Combined with positive economic indicators and political giddiness from the passage of the tax bill, it's all systems go for 2018 … at least, at first.

Congressional Republicans move quickly on their legislative agenda – above all, cuts to Social Security and Medicare – since they are increasingly worried about their hold on Congress after November.

Bitcoin suffers a big correction after swinging wildly in the last 10 days of December. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has added discussion of bitcoin to its next ministerial meeting. The Chinese are cracking down. For these and other reasons, sometimes in the next three months we will see a sell-off as latecomers panic and sell. Long-term investors will remain in bitcoin and it will creep back up, but will not revisit its December highs.

Wall Street Second Quarter

Initially, there will be a continued uptick in markets as tax cuts beginning to take effect at paycheck level and consumer confidence improvements. But signs of doubt begin to creep into the market as US macro indicators begin to weak – especially job figures.

Congressional Republicans continue to pursue a series of rapid legislative victories, but progress comes to halt as the Robert Mueller probe of President Donald Trump's Russia ties hits a climax – either because of a round of indictments of senior figures or because Trump fires Mueller. Either way, the stock market reacts badly, with a string of sharp swings as investors wait to see which way things go.

Wall Street Third Quarter

As the fallout from the Trump-Mueller issue continues, several new allegations come to light. The US market begins to slide as the prospect of a Democratic sweep of the House and Senate in November grows. The fear is not of specific policy changes … but rather of increased political instability.

Because of this, the Federal Reserve is forced to pass on promised rate increases. A coalition of countries file a World Trade Organization action against the US because of provisions in the new US tax law.

The dollar begins to weakened significantly. The gold price begins to tick upward.

Wall Street Fourth Quarter

As the November election approaches, there is a decline in US equities. Volatility increases markedly until the election itself. Gold continues its rise.

Immediately after the election – and regardless of the output – markets stabilize, but at a lower level, leading to annual stocks index gains for 2018 of half or less than those of 2017. Subsequently, one of two scenarios unresold:

  • A Democratic seizure of one or both houses of Congress initiates a prolonged period of market uncertainty, with no clear winners or losers. Investors know the tax bill will not be reversed, but the prospect of Democratic committee investigations of the Trump administration increase instability, and causes many US corporations to hold off on investment plans in the meantime.
  • Republican retention of the House and Senate steels markets, but more bombshell revelations / allegations against the Trump administration come out, increasing the political temperature as the year ends.

A Final Prediction

So there you have it. I think it's going to be an interesting year on Wall Street. It surprises me that there is not more talk of the market effects of the 2018 elections already. But they will be the big story of the year.
